Small Town Dreams

shake the dust off
if you can, you’re a better man
it’s hard to leave when you’re uneven
you just can’t face another day, so you say
the fact is, you just need a change of season

when you’re all through crying
and your tears have dried
you can breathe a little
in your small-town pride

you can never go back,
and you can never go home
but you know where the heart is
in the heartland so

shake the dust off if you can
you’re a better man …

there’s a fire burning
where the love light gleams
in their arms wide open
and your small-town dreams

i can never go back
lord, it makes me smile
‘all i left behind
i’ll be there in just a while

shake the dust off if you can
you’re a better man
it’s hard to leave when you’re uneven
just can’t face another day
so you say, the fact is
you just need a change of season

with a little more love
with a little more time
if you need a reason – we’ll be waiting

with a little more love
with a little more time
if you forget your dreams now – we’ll be waiting …

  1. I have loved this song for years, but could not find the composer until recently. Having learned your identity, I purchased a couple of other songs on iTunes.
Who was the female vocalist on “Small Town Dreams”?

    1. Hello! And thank you for your kind words. That made my day. Of all the songs on that album, that one has really stood out for some reason – even with me! 🙂
The female vocalist on that song is Grace Williams, a gospel singer from southern California. She has a great voice and does wonders with harmonies. I brought her in to sing backing vocals on that song, both on the “aahs” throughout the tune, and with the lead vocal in final stanza. The harmony she came up with was so much more interesting as a counter melody, we mixed me out and just left her in. She was surprised, too!
